Shimla, Aug. 20 -- Himachal Pradesh High Court has taken cognizance of a number of pending criminal cases registered against sitting MLAs and MPs in the state, including Congress legislator Sanjay Awasthi.

The action comes in the backdrop of a recent Supreme Court directive to ensure that criminal cases against elected representatives of the Parliament and State Assemblies are disposed of within six months.

During the hearing of a suo motu public interest litigation (CWPIL No. 9 of 2020), a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice GS Sandhawalia and Justice Ranjan Sharma asked the State government to place on record the photocopies of relevant documents related to charges framed against Awasthi and co-accused Vikramjeet Malik.
