Shimla, Jan. 9 -- In a significant ruling reinforcing the constitutional mandate of grassroots democracy, the Himachal Pradesh High Court on Friday directed that the Panchayat election process in the state be completed by April 30.

The court delivered its verdict on a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking the timely conduct of elections to Panchayati Raj Institutions.

The judgment was pronounced by a Division Bench comprising Justice Vivek Thakur and Justice Romesh Verma. The Bench ordered that the State Election Commission and the state government shall, through mutual coordination, finalise the voter list and reservation roster by February 28. The election process will commence on February 20 and must be concluded by April 30.
