Shimla, March 31 -- Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi said that Himachal Pradesh will have to improve the quality of its apples in order to compete with apples from countries like the United States and New Zealand.

He claimed that the rootstocks brought at a cost of Rs 130 crore during the previous BJP government for high-density plantations proved to be the biggest failed programme in the state.

Negi was replying on Tuesday in the State Assembly to a discussion on a private member's resolution moved by Congress MLA Kuldeep Singh Rathore during Private Members' Business Day.
