Chandigarh, Dec. 24 -- The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday took suo motu cognisance of the murder of kabaddi player Rana Balachauria in Mohali and summoned the Punjab Director General of Police to explain the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The court has directed the DGP to appear in person at the next hearing scheduled for January 15.

While hearing the matter, the court questioned whether proper permission had been obtained for the kabaddi tournament and what security arrangements were in place at the venue. It asked how many police personnel were deployed and whether surveillance measures such as CCTV cameras were installed.
