Srinagar, Sept. 3 -- A fresh spell of heavy rain has triggered panic across Kashmir, prompting authorities to order the closure of all schools and colleges in the division today.

The downpour, which began last evening and continued through the night, inundated several areas in south and central Kashmir, causing a sharp rise in water levels of streams and the Jhelum river.

Officials said Sheshnag Nallah and Lidder Nallah in south Kashmir have already crossed the flood danger mark, while the Jhelum is still flowing below it.

Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg, said the decision to shut educational institutions was taken as a precautionary measure.
