Chandigarh, Feb. 10 -- The Malwa region of Punjab, once celebrated as the state's agricultural backbone for cotton and sugarcane, is currently grappling with a catastrophic groundwater crisis.

Recent scientific evaluations and environmental reports indicate that the region comprising districts such as Bathinda, Faridkot, Fazilka, Muktsar, Barnala, and Ferozepur has transformed into a "cancer belt" due to the alarming presence of uranium, fluoride, arsenic, and other toxic heavy metals in the water table.
