New Delhi, Jan. 29 -- Harsh Vardhan Shringla took over as the new Foreign Secretary of India on Wednesday.

"A warm welcome from Team MEA," tweeted official spokesman in the ministry Raveesh Kumar.

"It is a great honour and truly a humbling experience to take over as the Foreign Secretary of India," Mr Shringla told reporters here.

"In doing so, I am conscious of the fact I am stepping into the shoes of my illustrious seniors who have upheld the highest standard of professionalism and integrity," he said.

He specially mentioned two of his immediate predecessors Vijay Gokhale, who retired on Tuesday, and Dr S Jaishankar - the incumbent External Affairs Minister.
