The proposed amendments to the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act had sought to extend the standard workday from 9 to 10 hours, with special provisions allowing up to 12-hour shifts and higher quarterly overtime limits.

The move triggered significant backlash, particularly from the Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees Union (KITU), which warned that such changes would undermine worker rights and normalize exploitative practices.
