New Delhi, Aug. 28 -- Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Tamil Nadu, told the Supreme Court Constitution Bench today that a Governor has no authority to act like a judge and examine the constitutional validity of Bills.

It is only for the courts, he argued, to decide whether a law is unconstitutional or repugnant to a central law.

The five-judge Bench, headed by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai and comprising Justices Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, P.S. Narasimha and A.S. Chandurkar, is hearing a Presidential Reference on the scope of the Governor's and President's powers under Articles 200 and 201, including whether timelines can be judicially fixed for assent to Bills.
