Panaji, Jan. 14 -- Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday alleged that state's liberation from Portugal was delayed by 14 years on account of country's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru who did not care for the coastal state.

Speaking at an Indian Army awareness event in the city, he said Nehru was responsible for the freedom of the state after India's independence.

"I feel, the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was responsible for Goa getting its freedom 14 years after India's Independence. Because of him we got freedom 14 years later. If he had political will, if he really cared about Goans and he would have wanted Goa to be free of Portuguese rule," he said.
