Panaji/New Delhi, Dec. 7 -- A deadly fire that ripped through a crowded nightclub in Goa over the weekend, killing 25 people, has prompted police arrests, a widening criminal investigation and allegations of glaring regulatory failures in one of India's most high-profile tourist hubs.
Authorities on Sunday arrested the general manager of Birch by Romeo Lane, the popular nightclub in the coastal belt of Arpora where a blaze shortly after Saturday-Sunday midnight left 25 people dead and several others injured.
Police said an arrest warrant has also been issued for the club's owner, who has not yet been located. A magisterial inquiry is underway to determine how the fire spread and whether safety protocols were ignored.
