Guwahati, Oct. 21 -- Mental illness now ranks among the top ten causes of health loss worldwide, particularly among young adults, highlighting a mental health emergency, says the landmark Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2023 published recently.
The GBD study said anxiety disorders have risen by 63%, and depression by 26% since 2010.
The GBD 2023, presented at the World Health Summit in Berlin and published in The Lancet and Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), found that in India, suicide remains a leading cause of death among those aged 15-29 years. Yet, mental health receives less than 1% of the national health budget, and stigma often prevents people from seeking help.
