Nahan, May 25 -- Torrential rains triggered widespread disruption across Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur district on Sunday, with the Giri River flowing above the danger mark and forcing authorities to open floodgates at the Jaton Barrage twice to manage the swelling waters.

According to officials, incessant rainfall for nearly six to seven hours caused a sudden rise in the river's water level.

Dinesh Kumar, posted at the barrage, informed the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) about the emergency releases at 5:20 am and 5:28 am. Initially, Gate No. 4 was opened, followed by Gates No. 3 and 4.

A flood warning was subsequently issued for residents living along the riverbanks.
