Lucknow/New Delhi, March 16 -- The Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation has set up a glass upcycling centre in the city to recycle discarded bottles and reduce the volume of glass waste reaching landfills, officials said.
The facility, established at the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) centre in Akbarpur, Baharampur in Vijay Nagar, has been launched under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0 and will process waste glass collected from households, commercial establishments and liquor outlets.
According to civic officials, glass accounts for around 3-4 per cent of municipal solid waste in the city. Unlike organic waste, glass does not decompose and can remain in landfills for hundreds of years, posing challenges for waste management.
