Varanasi, Dec. 4 -- The role of Assistant Commissioners and Drug Inspectors of the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) in issuing wholesale drug licences over the past six years has come under scrutiny following revelations of illegal trade in codeine-based cough syrup.

Senior officials have initiated an investigation into all officers posted in Varanasi during this period after multiple firms were found to exist only on paper. Several companies were discovered to be non-functional or entirely bogus, raising serious questions about the officials who issued licences without proper verificatication.
