Hazaribag, Dec. 16 -- : For years, the Birhor families of Nagrhi village in Jharkhand's Churcu block lived in conditions that tested survival and dignity alike. Makeshift houses with leaking walls, broken roofs, darkness and dampness were part of daily life. During monsoon, rainwater seeped through fragile walls. In winter, children shivered through cold nights. The hardship was routine, and attention from the system rare.
The turning point came during an administrative visit by Hazaribag Deputy Commissioner Shashi Prakash Singh. Seeing the condition of the Birhor tola firsthand, officials say the situation demanded immediate intervention. On the spot, the Deputy Commissioner directed that the houses be made habitable on priority.
