Shillong, Feb. 5 -- At least four people were killed and one seriously injured at an illegal coal mine in a remote area in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district on Thursday, officials said. More fatalities are feared.

A team of bomb squads, forensic experts, State Disaster Response Force and Fire and Emergency Service have rushed to the blast site at Mynsngat Thangkso area to assess the situation.

Officials said there could be more fatalities, but so far reports from the site have confirmed retrieval of four bodies. District police chief of East Jaintia Hills, Vikash Kumar, confirmed that it was a dynamite blast that occurred in the illegal coal mine.
