Chennai, Oct. 19 -- Four people were charred to death in a massive explosion after firecrackers stored in a house went up in flames on the eve of Diwali at Thandarai village near suburban Avadi.

Police, after a preliminary investigation, said that four people had died on the spot, and the house was reduced to rubble under the impact of the explosion. All the deceased were said to be members of the family, who were engaged in the sale of crackers.

Diwali is being celebrated tomorrow across Tamil Nadu, and the crackers and fireworks were stored in the house for sale. A pall of gloom has descended upon the neighbourhood following the tragedy.
