New Delhi, Sept. 9 -- A new study by Indian scientists has found the formation of Antarctica's ice sheets, around 34 million years ago, may have played a key role in creating the Indian monsoon system.

This discovery comes from the analysis of fossil leaves found in Nagaland, which show that the region once had a warm and rainy climate.

The scientists from the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (Lucknow) and the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (Dehradun) -- both autonomous institutes under the Department of Science and Technology (DST) -- say this connection between the South Pole and India's climate is not just about the past.
