London, July 2 -- Five top-10 seeds, including China's Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, crashed out of the first round at Wimbledon in a day of upsets and soaring temperatures.
Zheng, the No. 5 seed in the women's singles draw, suffered her third consecutive first-round exit at the grass-court Grand Slam, falling to Czech doubles specialist Katerina Siniakova 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 yesterday.
The match was played as London endured its hottest day of the year, with temperatures surpassing 33 degrees Celsius.
"I should have done better in my service games," said Zheng, who was broken twice after leading
5-3 in the opening set.
"I don't think the surface is a challenge for me. I just felt that I should raise my level in my service games today." ...
