New Delhi, Jan. 2 -- In a major milestone for India's high-speed rail programme, the first mountain tunnel breakthrough of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project was achieved at Palghar in Maharashtra, union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Friday.

Describing the bullet train as a game changer for affordable, fast and modern travel, the minister said the project will significantly boost economic activity and employment along the corridor, cutting travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to just 1 hour and 58 minutes.

The breakthrough has been achieved in an approximately 1.5 km-long mountain tunnel (MT-5), among the longest in Palghar district, located between Virar and Boisar bullet train stations.
