Barrackpore, Dec. 30 -- At least 200 shops were destroyed in a fire at Jadu Babu market, close to the Birati railway station in North 24 Parganas, in the early hours on Tuesday. No casualty has been reported, official sources said.
Seven fire-fighting vehicles were rushed, but firemen could not reach the origin of blaze due to congestion and narrow approach roads in the market.
Sources said the blaze destroyed at least 200 shops in the Jadu Babu market under North Dum Dum police station. Though no casualties are reported, small-time traders said they faced huge losses. The blaze, possibly starting from one shop, spread rapidly due to narrow lanes and congested structures, prompting officials to promise support and an investigation.
