Taipei, July 14 -- A fire broke out at a lithium battery factory in the city of Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan and left at least 15 people injured, Taiwanese broadcaster TVBS reported on Monday.

The factory belongs to Sanyuan Energy Technology, the broadcaster specified. All those injured have been taken to hospital, TVBS reported.

The broadcaster also reported, citing the Kaohsiung city environmental protection bureau, that the plant will be fined from $3,400 to $171,000 due to air pollution.

Moreover, the bureau also warned the local residents that as a result of the fire the air can get polluted and called on the people who live in the neighboring areas to stay at home and keep windows closed.
