Chennai, Sept. 30 -- Even as the global nuclear power industry moves towards small modular reactors (SMRs) and several types of small reactors are under development worldwide, the existing safety regulations would continue to apply to them, said a top official of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Answering a question raised by UNI at the recent World Atomic Week held in Moscow on the need for separate safety regulations for the different types of SMRs being developed, Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the IAEA, said, "The existing regulations for bigger reactors would apply to the smaller ones."He added that the safety regulations for nuclear reactors are regularly reviewed and updated by the IAEA.
