New York, Sept. 20 -- In a political win for Europe, a UNSC resolution on Friday on whether to permanently lift international sanctions on Iran was voted down, giving an edge to the E3 nations' bid to reimpose snapback sanctions on September 28, over Iran's nuclear non-compliance with the IAEA.
The resolution, tabled by South Korea which is currently holding the Security Council presidency, was a procedural part of a process launched last month after the E3 nations - UK, France, and Germany - threatened to trigger the so-called snapback mechanism under the dictates of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, accusing Iran of "significant non-performance" due to its refusal to allow IAEA inspections, and its vast stores of heavily enriched uranium.
