Siliguri, Nov. 30 -- An adult elephant was killed and a cub sustained serious wounds after they were hit by a goods train in West Bengal's northern district of Jalpaiguri, home of many wildlife and Great one-horn rhinos, official sources said on Sunday.
The mishap happened in the wee hours on Sunday when a group of five pachyderms was crossing the track, and two of them were hit by the goods train on the down line near Khalaigram under the Dhupguri block in Jalpaiguri. After being hit by the engine, the trucker raced through some 500 mts and fell dead.
The cub was found near the track, and the forest officials evacuated it to safety and were being treated, sources added.
