Kolkata, April 6 -- The Election Commission has rejected the plea of former Kolkata Police Commissioner Supratim Sarkar seeking exemption from observer duty on medical grounds and has directed him to join his assignment in Tamil Nadu by Monday.

According to sources, Sarkar has been instructed to assume charge as a police observer without further delay.

The Commission had appointed him as an observer for the constituencies of Tirunelveli, Ambasamudram, Palayamkottai, Nanguneri and Radhapuram in Tamil Nadu in view of the ongoing elections.

Soon after the appointment, Sarkar had approached the Commission requesting relief from the responsibility citing health concerns.
