Dhaka, Aug. 24 -- At least eight passengers were killed and 30 others injured when a bus plunged into a gorge after breaking the railings of a bridge on Dhaka-Kolkata Highway at Dhuldi Rail-Gate area of Sadar Upazila in Faridpur district in Bangladesh on Saturday evening.

Nurul Alam Dulal, Senior Station Officer of Faridpur Fire Service and Civil Defence, confirmed the accident.

"A Borisha-bound bus was coming from Dhaka, which hit the railing of a bridge around 2:30 pm, killing 5 passengers on the spot and 3 in hospital," Mr Dulal told UNI.

According to local officials, toll could rise. The deceased were yet to be identified.

At the time of filling the report, the rescue operation was underway.
