Cairo, May 31 -- The foreign ministers of Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria called on rivals in Libya to put an end to escalation, according to a joint statement published by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry on Saturday.

"In light of the dangerous developments in Libya and the security situation in Tripoli, the ministers called on all Libyan parties to exercise maximum restraint and immediately cease the escalation," the statement read.

The three foreign ministers met in the Egyptian capital Cairo on Saturday as part of a trilateral mechanism on Libya. They highlighted the need for a swift resolution to the Libyan crisis and the end of the political divide, stating that the resolution process should be Libyan-owned.
