Lucknow, Dec. 18 -- The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has intensified its investigation into a large syndicate involved in the illegal trafficking of codeine-based cough syrup, sources said on Thursday.

According to sources, the network carried out financial transactions worth crores of rupees through hawala operators, whose trail is now being aggressively tracked by the agency.

Investigators suspect that after crossing the India-Bangladesh border, the supply chain of the cough syrup came under the control of certain Islamic organisations. The proceeds generated from this trade are believed to have been used for suspicious activities.

However, the ED is conducting a detailed probe to gather concrete evidence in this direction.
