Quito, Feb. 26 -- Ecuador's government on Tuesday declared a state of emergency in eight provinces ravaged by torrential downpours this rainy season, the office of the Presidency said.
The provinces affected include the coastal and southern ones, according to the statement.
The state of emergency will facilitate logistical support from the Ministry of Defense and the mobilization of all levels of government in critical areas, among other urgent measures.
"The priority is to protect the lives of citizens, safeguard basic services and provide support to communities facing flooding," the Presidency said.
