New Delhi, April 22 -- The Election Commission on Monday barred Congress leader and cricketer-turned politician Navjot Singh Sidhu from campaigning for 72 hours for violation of model code of conduct.

The three-day ban will comes into force from 1000 hrs on April 23, the Commission said.

The poll body said that Mr Sidhu violated the poll conduct by making statements on religious lines.

The Election Commission said "convinced that he (Mr Sidhu) has made an objectionable speech which has the tone and tenor to aggravate existing differences or create mutual hatred between different religious communities".
