Kolkata, Oct. 3 -- A few hours after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) had created a "man-made disaster" by releasing 65,000 cusecs of water and putting millions of lives in peril during the festive season, the Central agency further increased the discharge to 70,000 cusecs, worsening the flood situation in several districts of the state.

DVC authorities confirmed that water release from both Maithon and Panchet reservoirs had been raised to 70,000 cusecs-42,500 cusecs from Maithon and 27,500 cusecs from Panchet today evening.

Alongside, an "orange alert" was issued for Damodar River basin areas in West Bengal, particularly in Burdwan, Howrah, and Hooghly districts.
