Hyderabad, June 12 -- Dr Yogesh Raj Srivastava from Hyderabad has donated blood 136 times since 1983.

On the occasion of World Blood Donor Day on June 14, Dr Srivastava, a Godfrey Phillips Bravery Award winner, in a statement, appealed to the youth to come forward to donate blood and save their lives.

India requires an estimated 14.6 million units of blood annually; he said there is a constant need for blood transfusions, with a demand arising every 2 seconds.

Despite the efforts of blood donation initiatives, there is a persistent shortage, with an estimated 1 million units needed annually, he said.
