Mumbai, April 18 -- Dr Mathew Samuel Kalarickal, eminent cardiologist, the 'Father of Angioplasty' passed away on Friday, after a brief illness.
He was 77.
Dr. Kalarickal performed the country's first angioplasty in 1986, forever changing the landscape of cardiac care.
Born on January 6, 1948, in Kerala, Dr. Kalarickal graduated from Kottayam Medical College before specializing in cardiology in Chennai. He trained in the U.S. under Dr. Andreas Gruentzig-the global pioneer of angioplasty-and returned to India in 1985 to introduce this life-saving technique.
In an interview, he remarked: "The enormous satisfaction I derive from the achievement of establishing angioplasty in the country is beyond what money can buy."
