Nagpur, Oct. 14 -- Sixty-nine years ago, on October 14, 1956, India witnessed a historic moment when Dr B.R. Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, embraced Buddhism in Nagpur, an act that profoundly reshaped the nation's social and spiritual fabric.

Accompanied by his wife, Dr Savita Ambedkar, Dr Ambedkar was initiated into the Buddhist faith by the Burmese monk, Bhikku Chandramani.

This event, commemorated annually at Nagpur's Deekshabhoomi, symbolized his decisive break from caste oppression and his quest for a more egalitarian path through the teachings of the Buddha.
