New Delhi, Dec. 20 -- A dense layer of toxic smog engulfed the national capital on Saturday morning, while the city's average Air Quality Index (AQI) level was in the very poor zone, just two points short from 'severe' category.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board's daily AQI bulleting released at aropund 4 pm , the city's index value was 398, with PM 2.5 particulate matter being the primary pollutant in the city's air.

The readings released at 4 pm on Saturday, were based on the observations from the total 40 AQI monitoring stations across the city, and the readings were the average of past 24 hours.
