Kannur, Dec. 28 -- Voicing his concern over democracy being under strain, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan today said that "defending history is a democratic responsibility".

Speaking after inaugurating the 84th session of three-day Indian History Congress (IHC) at Government Brennan College at Thalassery, Vijayan stressed that the IHC conveys a clear message that history will not surrender to power, truth cannot be replaced by myths and knowledge will not bow to authority.

The Chief Minister noted that the IHC is being held at time when democracy is under strain. Distorting or erasing history weakens democracy and turns it into propaganda, that is why the IHC has gained national attention, he said.
