Kolkata, Aug. 19 -- : The Meteorological Department today forecast moderate to heavy rainfall over Kolkata and several districts of South Bengal through the week, triggered by a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal that made landfall near Gopalpur in Odisha earlier in the day.

According to officials at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore, the low-pressure system that had developed over the sea has intensified into a deep depression and entered land near Gopalpur on Tuesday morning.

The system is now positioned over southern Odisha and adjoining Chhattisgarh, and is expected to gradually lose strength to become a well-marked low-pressure area. Despite its weakening, it is set to cause widespread rainfall activity across South B...
