Washington, Sept. 29 -- The death toll in the attack on a church in the United States has gone up to five, with those killed including the gunman, a police officer said.

The gunman had sprayed bullets at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan, on Sunday, after he drove his car into the premises and opened fire on the crowd during a large service, according to Xinhua.

The police believe the suspect "deliberately" set fire to the church. The fire has been extinguished, Grand Blanc Police Chief William Renye said.

US law enforcement has identified the suspect in the attack as Thomas Jacob Sanford, a 40-year-old man from a neighbouring town of Burton.
