Beijing, Jan. 7 -- The death toll from the magnitude 6.8 earthquake in the Tibet Autonomous Region in southwestern Chine has increased to 53, with 62 people injured, the crisis response center said on Tuesday.

"As of 12:30 [04:30 GMT] January 7, as a result of the earthquake in Dingri County in the city of Xigaze, 53 people died and another 62 were injured," the center said in a statement.

The earthquake occurred on Tuesday morning, with its epicenter located 6 miles below the surface. Seismologists have so far recorded 49 aftershocks.
