Nicosia, Oct. 21 -- The Cypriot government will seek stronger United Nations efforts to resume talks on Cyprus reunification following the election of a new Turkish Cypriot leader, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said Monday.
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides congratulated Tufan Erhurman, who won Sunday's Turkish Cypriot election by a large margin, and reaffirmed his readiness to resume negotiations on a federal solution under UN auspices.
He said that an upcoming UN meeting in November could provide a key opportunity to restart peace efforts.
Letymbiotis said Christodoulides plans to meet Erhurman after returning from a summit of Mediterranean European union (EU) countries in Slovenia.
