Amravati, Jan. 7 -- Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal on Wednesday alleged that the law-and-order situation in the state has deteriorated due to the absence of a full-time home minister.

He demanded strict and exemplary punishment for those responsible for the killing of Congress leader Hidayatullah Patel in Akola district.

Addressing a press conference here, Sapkal paid homage to Patel and strongly condemned the attack.

He claimed that criminal gangs involved in violent crimes, drug trafficking, illegal sand mining and land grabbing were operating unchecked across Maharashtra, with such activities now spreading to rural areas as well.
