Agartala, Dec. 20 -- The farmers' wing of CPI-M in Tripura Krishan Sabha on Saturday expressed opposition to planting of palm trees on tea garden land in the state, labelling the action as illegal and harmful to the tea industry.

All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) secretary Pabitra Kar accused the state Agriculture Department of conducting a palm plantation festival within tea gardens, which contravenes current land and tea plantation regulations.

He claimed that this initiative is designed to undermine tea gardens and encourage tea garden owners to abandon their plantations. He noted that in various regions, land mafias have already started to take over tea garden land by planting areca nut and coconut saplings.
