Thiruvananthapuram, July 22 -- he Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of V. S. Achuthanandan, describing him as an outstanding leader and a stalwart of the communist movement.

The Polit Bureau said that Achuthanandan has left an indelible mark on Kerala politics.

In a statement, the Polit Bureau termed Achuthanandan an able organiser who spearheaded various struggles in Kerala, recalling his first brush with the trade union movement by organising the coir workers at the Aspinwal Company, where he had started working.

In 1940, at just 17 years of age, VS joined the Communist Party.
