Mumbai, Sept. 23 -- A sessions court here recently set aside Bollywood film director Ram Gopal Varma's conviction and sentencing in a cheque bounce case, and acquitted him of the charges while hearing an appeal as part of Lok Adalat proceeding.

Varma was awarded three months of simple imprisonment by a local court in the month of January, seven years after the case was filed against him under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.

The local court had earlier directed him to give Rs 3.72 lakh to the complainant as compensation.

The case was filed against the filmmaker's company in 2018, but he was released on bail in June 2022 after he executed a personal recognition bond and paid a cash security of Rs 5,000.
