Nagpur, Nov. 3 -- The Nagpur Municipal Corporation is set to revive the long-delayed 'Nandgram Project,' a city initiative aimed at protecting cattle while addressing public health and safety concerns arising from densely populated cattle shelters.

Maharashtra has banned cow slaughter since 1976, and the Maharashtra Animal Protection Act, 2015, strengthened these provisions, extending protection to bulls. Violations carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a Rs 10,000 fine.

Nagpur has faced ongoing challenges with 1,046 cattle shelters within the city, including 589 unauthorised establishments.

Residents have reported health hazards and accidents linked to stray animals from these densely located shelters.
