Umsaw Khwan, March 28 -- Meghalaya and Assam need to work together to mitigate the carbon emission in Byrnihat town, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday.

"Byrnihat belongs to both Assam and Meghalaya, and obviously we have shared responsibilities and I will work with the government of Meghalaya to see that the pollution level comes down," Sarma said at the sidelines of a programme at the North Eastern Police Academy (NEPA) here in Meghalaya.

Byrnihat, an industrial town on the Assam-Meghalaya border, has been designated as the "most polluted city in the world", as per the World Air Quality Report 2024 by Swiss technology company IQAir.
