New Delhi, Oct. 10 -- The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), India's top drug regulator, has directed all state governments to submit a comprehensive list of cough syrup manufacturers as it launches a joint audit of these companies.
The move follows the tragic deaths of over 20 children in the past month, allegedly linked to contaminated cough syrups, a senior Health Ministry official said today.
The CDSCO has informed the World Health Organization (WHO) that it has identified three contaminated cough syrup brands-Coldrif, Respifresh, and ReLife-containing toxic levels of Diethylene Glycol (DEG), a harmful substance linked to the recent child fatalities.
