Ranchi, Oct. 3 -- The festive cheer of Durga Puja in city has been overshadowed this year as continuous rains have left fairs around pandals deserted, dealing a severe blow to stall vendors and amusement operators.

According to vendors, what was expected to be the peak business season has instead turned into a struggle for survival for small traders.

On Mahanavami and Dussehra heavy footfall was anticipated, but persistent rainfall kept visitors away. Intermittent showers dashed hopes of vendors who had invested heavily in food stalls, toys, and amusement rides.

Ram Kumar, a food stall owner near the R R Sporting pandal, said, "We had purchased a large stock this time thinking people would shop freely but the rain has ruined everything. ...
